Responsible Tourism

Bari Kothi aligns itself with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and works persistently to promote sustainable and responsible tourism. Every action arises from its commitment to the local community within which it operates. The experience driven nature of a getaway here is a tribute to the rural eco-system whereby tourists are in close communion with the people residing here.
Rethinking and reimagining tourism has been the sole endeavour for Bari Kothi since its very inception. The vision is to expand the idea of ‘sustainable tourism’ with an awareness that is both inclusive and at the same time expansive.

Bari Kothi takes pride in its ability to curate guest experiences that is born out of its intimate bonding with the community and nature. This forms the USP of Bari Kothi as a tourist destination, transcending it from a mere weekend getaway to something that is both uplifting, and informative.

Community Development

Bari Kothi is run by women and men from troubled economic and familial backgrounds, who have found a home in this property. We are a Jain family celebrating Durga Puja with Christian & Muslim devotees to Maa. We have people who are specially abled and people from the lgbtqia community; we have farmers turned hoteliers who again turn to farmers in the harvest season. More than fifty ‘Barir meye’ (daughters of the house) take care of the heritage as their own and swear by the principle of अतिथि देवो भव (our guest is our God) The goal of restoration was only secondary; turning the hotel into a self-sustaining ecosystem took centre stage, where even if the main people are unplugged from the system, the ecosystem keeps running.

Adaptive Reuse

The actual groundwork of the restoration was carried out by very ordinary and unskilled labour from the local community and that became the very ethos of the project. .From restoring beams made of teak wood to working on the vintage furniture, the restoration of Bari Kothi involved a lot of attention to detail, enough so Bari Kothi would last another century or more. The end result was that more than 50 unskilled labourers became skilled and are now involved in all facets of operation of the property. The endeavour to restore one’s ancestral heritage had turned into Bengal’s first ever restored, rustic, luxury heritage hotel.

Reimagining Tourism

Tourism should be looked at differently now; it should be looked at from the view of improving lives we touch- improving communities, promoting local ethics and culture, promoting craft, promoting heritage, promoting equality. the pledge is to contribute to lives; save the environment, visit and create awareness of our own culture and heritage.
